What Is a Bollard? A Brief History & Modern Use

From the early days of embedding cannons upside-down into the ground to moor ships, or installing timber posts to manage horse-drawn traffic, bollards have evolved into a highly effective solution for traffic management, access control, and security.

Today, a bollard is typically a vertical post, manufactured from materials such as steel, stainless steel, or timber, and either concreted into the ground (root-fixed) or surface-mounted using a base plate. Advanced options include removable and retractable (telescopic) bollards, providing flexibility in access control without compromising on durability or strength.

Key Applications of Bollards

Bollards serve a variety of critical functions:

  • Vehicle Access Restriction – while maintaining free pedestrian flow
  • Impact Protection – outside storefronts, ATMs, roller shutters, and loading bays
  • Building & Machinery Protection – in commercial settings, factories, and warehouses
  • Perimeter Security – as a cost-effective boundary marker
  • Internal Safety – creating safe walkways and preventing forklift damage in industrial facilities

Their robust construction, long lifespan, and minimal maintenance requirements make bollards a smart choice for both permanent and semi-permanent installations.

Bollard Materials Available

Galvanised Mild Steel Bollards

Strong, cost-effective, and highly versatile, our galvanised mild steel bollards are fabricated in-house and available in round or square profiles. They are galvanised to prevent rust, with the option of powder coating in any RAL colour. Available in standard and custom sizes, these bollards are ideal for access control, traffic management, and perimeter protection.

Stainless Steel Bollards

Combining strength with modern aesthetics, our stainless steel bollards offer a low-maintenance, anti-vandal solution. Available in Grade 304 or marine-grade 316 (ideal for coastal areas), these posts do not require galvanising and come with various fixing, top cap, and banding options. Custom fabrication is available upon request.

Timber Bollards (Hardwood & Softwood)

For a more natural appearance, timber bollards are an excellent choice. Available in Oak, Iroko, Larch, or Tanalised Softwood, these wooden posts offer strength, visual appeal, and long-lasting performance. Fixed or removable versions (with galvanised sockets) are available. All timber is sourced from sustainable forestry schemes.

If you already have your timber bollards or fence posts, we supply the ground sockets separately.

Recycled Plastic Bollards

An eco-friendly alternative, our recycled plastic bollards are made from 100% recycled materials. These posts offer excellent resistance to weathering, UV, and impact—with zero maintenance required. A great choice for environmentally conscious projects.

Types of Bollards

Fixed (Static) Bollards

For permanent security solutions, fixed bollards offer unmatched durability and cost-effectiveness. They can be concreted in (root fix) or bolted down using base plates. A minimum 300mm depth is recommended for standard posts, with heavy-duty options requiring up to 600mm for optimal impact resistance.

Heavy Duty Steel Bollards

These are constructed from larger diameter, thick-walled steel tubes and are designed for maximum impact protection. Ideal for commercial premises, these bollards can be filled with concrete on-site and are commonly used to protect shopfronts, shutter doors, and high-value infrastructure.

Fold-Down Parking Posts

Designed for flexibility and convenience, these folding bollards are surface-mounted and can be locked in the upright position. When lowered, they allow vehicles to pass freely, making them perfect for private driveways and commercial car parks.

Retractable (Telescopic) Bollards

Our telescopic bollards are embedded into the ground and feature a key-operated locking mechanism. The bollard retracts into a flush-fitting ground socket when not in use. These are ideal for residential driveways, commercial entrances, and vehicle theft prevention.

Removable (Lift-Out) Bollards

These bollards sit in a galvanised steel socket and can be completely lifted out when not in use. A shallower socket depth (approx. 300mm) makes them ideal for areas with underground services or digging restrictions.

Bollard Installation Depth Guidelines

To ensure maximum stability and security:

  • Standard steel bollards (1200mm): Minimum 300mm into concrete
  • Heavy-duty bollards (1500–1800mm): Minimum 500–600mm foundation depth
